How much does it cost to learn on Coursera in comparison?

Hello Dear Reader,

I have been learning on MOOCs(massive open online courses) for years now. So much so that this past April, I decided to pick my favorite and bought the Coursera Plus annual subscription, thinking this has to be the best bang for my buck at $399 a year as far as I can tell, it unlimited but only for those classes that are included which are many. As long as I learn at least one class a year, this is a DEAL, correct? Let’s crunch the numbers.

https://studentloanhero.com/featured/cost-per-credit-hour-study/

As you can see above, the average price per credit looks high compared to the cost of Couserea Plus. But then you have to remember to multiply it by 3 or 4 depending on the credit amount of the course. So really, you would probably pay much more on average. We could say $1,782 for 3 credit classes or $2,376 for 4 credit classes on average.

I went to Depaul University, which, as you can see above, is way below the average of the most expensive category of 4-yr private schools, which is $1,039 per credit and what I assume would be its category. The average for a 4yr private school would be $3,117 for 3 credits and $4,156 for 4 credit hours. I was actually surprised to find that Depaul was the cheapest of 4yrs private Unis in the city.

How do the Unis compare?

Below I compared the most well-known universities that exist in the area. Which are from the Cheapest to the Most Expensive.

https://www.collegecalc.org/colleges/illinois/university-of-chicago/
https://www.collegecalc.org/colleges/illinois/northwestern-university/

So unless you were to go to CCC or UIC, it is more expensive, but then you probably have to commute and probably not the convenience of learning from home online. Then there are the numerous courses that you can get for the same annual price.

I honestly had no idea that NorthWestern (NW) was much more than the University of Chicago(UC). UC looks like a deal in comparison.

⚠️ The DRAWBACK to the Plus Subscription ⚠️

https://learner.coursera.help/hc/en-us/articles/360036151932-Courses-content-available-on-Coursera-Plus

There is, however, ⚠️a drawback to the Plus subscription, and you should consider that ⚠️NOT all classes on Coursera are covered. I was shocked to have chosen a PWC course and then found out that I was being charged extra. 💢$49 a month, to be more precise💢. And that was on top of the Plus subscription.

Needless to say, I’ve paused taking my Plus class to focus on and finish the PWC course and will have to double-check any other classes that I take moving forward. I’ll admit I will probably be choosing only Plus courses moving forward.

I hope this has helped you, dear reader.
I know I will be hunkering down for a while and maxing out my subscription to the MAX. I would encourage you to take advantage of the deal while it lasts. I can only imagine the dollar $igns rolling through the eyes of these deans as they consider online to be a more viable option and choose to charge more.

Please subscribe✅, Like👍, and share📤 so that others you know, or don’t, will see and learn just as you have.
